AI, Healthcare & Leadership - The Questions Behind the Technology
A lot is happening with AI in healthcare right now. I am interested in what actually changes when AI technologies are put into use.
Does a physician make a better decision? Does a care team have better information? Are we reducing administrative work? Are patients getting better care? Those are much more useful questions for me than discussing the technical competencies of the AI model.
My focus is on clinical AI and what happens when it becomes part of everyday healthcare. How will a clinician use it? What information is it relying on? Does it work as well across different patient populations? What happens when the data or clinical environment changes? And if an AI system begins influencing a decision, how do we know when we should or should not rely on it?
Healthcare has become an important area of focus for me because AI is getting closer to decisions that affect people directly. Once that happens, I want to understand much more than whether the technology works.
Why Healthcare AI Matters to Me
I keep coming back to what happens when AI leaves the lab and enters actual healthcare.
I’ve worked with technology for more than two decades, inside large, regulated, and complex organizations. One thing that experience teaches you pretty quickly is that getting the technology right is only part of the job. You also have to understand where it is going, who will use it and what changes once it gets there.
That is what interests me about healthcare AI.
I am focused on what happens when a clinician starts relying on an AI recommendation. Whether the system performs equally well for different patients. Whether it really reduces work or just moves the work somewhere else. And whether we are paying enough attention after deployment, when the technology, data and clinical environment inevitably start changing.
These are practical questions, but they are becoming increasingly important as AI moves into everyday healthcare. This is where I spend more of my time and contribute what I have learned from years of building and leading technology in complex regulated environments.
